Activity: make a pledge
Read chapters ‘First Salmon Ceremony’ and ‘Warming waters’ in The Last Salmon Run visual story.
Thinking specifically about the land, resources, culture and traditional knowledge that has been either stolen or lost due to colonization, develop your own personal or professional Pledge of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
Here’s an example to get you started.
I ———————————, in the spirit of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada and wild salmon conservation do solemnly pledge:
To actively learn more about Indigenous Peoples
To do my best to conserve wild salmon, to the benefit of the ecosystem and to Coast Salish traditions and culture.
To challenge any examples of racism against Indigenous Peoples
To find ways to address any misconceptions or myths about Indigenous Peoples I witness among other settlers
To encourage others to actively engage with reconciliation
To actively encourage ongoing support for National Indigenous Peoples Day every June 21st, and to discourage the celebration of Canada Day, every July 1
To remember my status as a privileged settler on stolen land as I go about my day
